With the competition for the right talent increasing by the day, the corporates are focusing on individuals who can infuse fresh ideas into the system and take the initiative in starting new projects, pitch innovative solutions and create new opportunities for the business. The key to success is to learn all you can, challenge yourself, and keep improving. In a career, miracles do not simply happen. Instead, career success is the culmination of appropriate learning and utilizing your knowledge to achieve the goals set by you. Eventually, your career success depends on how much fire you have in your belly.
Here are ten guidelines that I want you to contemplate and absorb for your career success.
• Set Goals for Yourself- It helps to motivate and focus
One of the most crucial tasks a person must do for their career growth is to fix challenging targets to be achieved. A set of calculated goals can serve as a roadmap to success, providing you with objectives to meet along the road. Make sure that you set challenging but realistic goals which on accomplishing, boost your career growth. Divide the larger goal into much smaller ones aligning with your primary target and meeting the criteria set for reaching the final goal for your career.
• Take Responsibility but move on
If you want to win your career battle, you have to take ownership of your triumphs as well as setbacks. Whenever you succeed, understand and analyse the reasons for your success and see if you can emulate and scale up the next time. And if you fail, don’t panic or become disappointed, but learn the lessons and build on them in the future. Life is all about moving on. Many a time, in life, failure teaches us more effectively than success. And a majority of successful people have endured a lot of initial failures in their attempts to achieve their goals. People who gave up failed, moving into obscurity. And those who persisted with their efforts have been successful and hogging the limelight. They would not be where they are today had they not learned from their mistakes.
• Attitude Matters
Have a positive attitude towards your career. Positivity begets positive outcomes. Being positive and optimistic will help you in focussing on the right areas while keeping away unnecessary distractions. The focus on finding a solution will ensure that any problem or challenges encountered can be overcome and achieve the desired results.
• Be open for constructive feedback
Let’s accept that people are unique and will have their perspective and opinion on almost everything. As a professional, we interact with people either as a colleague or as a client or as a vendor. It’s essential to consider their opinion and act upon as and when deemed fit by us. An objective understanding of feedback about you is one of the fastest ways to learn, hone your skills, and advance in your career. It shouldn’t matter how the feedback comes and from whom. Focus only on the message of the feedback so that you may analyze and understand it in the right context. If that can help you to improve further, then go ahead and put what you learned into practice.
• Communicate effectively
Efficiency in communication is key to an employee’s and an organization’s success. The content, the choice of words, and the tone and tenor of the message should be apt for the message to be received correctly. As an employee, you need to develop effective communication skills, which starts with active listening and ends with providing honest feedback on your understanding of the message communicated. Your objectivity and intention must reflect in your communication.
• To be the best version of yourself, you need to keep raising the bar.
Your dreams and aspirations impact what you think, what you believe in, and your behavior. To quote Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam, “Dream, Dream, Dream, Dream transform into thoughts and thoughts result in action.” Dream big, set your standards high, give it all, enjoy your efforts, and don’t worry about the outcome; success will undoubtedly be yours. People setting high standards are, most of the time, more successful than those who don’t challenge themselves and are reluctant to raise the bar. At the end of an appropriate period, review and reflect upon your plans and goals to understand if you need to improve upon them. If yes, do it incrementally, bit by bit, but consistently until you’ve become the best version of yourself.
• Brand Yourself
Branding is essential nowadays. Your branding is a reflection of peoples’ perceptions and opinions about you, and it matters a lot in the marketplace. It’s necessary to make all kinds of right noises like writing a blog, creating a professional social media profile, or simply by providing excellent services.
• Build your professional network
Networking is all about opportunities and connections. When you meet new people, you get a chance to connect and build a mutually beneficial relationship. Successful people always invest their time and effort in creating a good network and life-lasting profitable relationships. You can start by creating your profile and being active on social media like LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, FB, and also in the right WhatsApp group. You’ll find lots of opportunities and career choices along the way in these channels.
• Associate with the right kind of people
Surround yourself with positive and “can-do” people. Being amongst the right people is crucial as it helps to cultivate productive qualities. Be with people that make you want to be a better person and remind you what’s essential in life and encourage you to accomplish your goals.
• Should know when to give up- Your time and efforts are precious
Achieving success is mostly a matter of hanging on, even after others have given up. Resilience is a mandatory attribute on the way to achievement. But sometimes even when you are giving more than your 100% and doing all the right things, the expected outcomes might not materialize. After having taken stock of the situation and if you realize that nothing else is possible, then it’s wise to revisit your plan and come better prepared for the next task. It makes sense not to get stuck and come out of the rut so that you can start again with renewed vigour and an improved approach.
My best wishes for a happy and successful career.
