Analyzing the incident through a different lens
Did Indra really came disguised?
Our next doubt or question shall be, was it really Devendra in disguise who approached Ahalye on that day? Well, to tackle this doubt , again we are to refer back to the powers and features of the Devas or Celestial Gods noted earlier and consider them in the present day context when we normally talk of the common phrases used in our present daily colloquial language. Our phrases do indicate our acceptance to contextual reference, influence and power of the Hindu deities on various life time events we are witnessing :
- Fury of Wind God
- Airborne defects, diseases
- Devastations due to Water, Floods, Waterborne defects
- Hurricane, storm
- Sensuality, controlling the senses
- and so on…
So, by applying the logic and implication on the unique power and nature of the celestial gods to this Ahalye-Gautama story …. can’t we infer that Devendra made sensual impulses through the mind of Gautama in his absence ?
None can elude the responsibilities in their work sphere and it’s but natural that we stumble during the execution. No exception to this, Neither ascetics, nor Trimurthis.
The story of Shiva-Kama !
Lord Shiva too not spared!! That Kamadeva – directed his Cupid arrows of flowers on Lord Shiva leading to the birth of a son to Lord Shiva (widely acknowledged as Kumara sambhava). Though the act of Kamadeva was for the sake of world welfare, he was burnt down to ashes & cursed by Lord Shiva to be Ananga (Devoid of body- (ananga means without limbs or parts, a suggestive title of all spiritual potencies, qualities, or attributes which pervades our manas (mind). Thus not only is the god Kama bodiless, but every distinct portion of the human spiritual nature is equally so).
This story signifies the power of Kama who could instigate Lord Shiva himself and hence, we can imply that it could be Sage Gautama himself, impelled by Indra (Indriya- sensory) – forced Ahalye for an act at an inappropriate time. If we accept this standpoint, Sage Gautama is the main culprit.
Who is the real culprit?
However, when we see it from the angle of the responsibility of the sincere faithful wife, Ahalye failed to alert her husband on the wrong act he was embarking on. Hence, she too could be considered somewhat wrong in her act.
As we are aware, not only Crime as well as abetting crime is also punishable under law! But the intensity of penalties for both are simply different!
In this regard, Sage Gautama somehow got rid of his sin through his penance
But how about Ahalye? She was ineligible to get rid the curse by herself.
Or shall we say so? A lady who had become dead like a stone – came to life with the nudge of Rama’s feet – she became more holy and pure – so did she deserve the top spot in the list of Pancha Mahakanyas!
Everything in the world, is governed within a replicate cycle and frame work. All activities by default follow the same cycle, be it our feelings, births, deaths. Trees -from Germination of a seed into plant and grows into tree, flowers blossom to their respective seasons and attain effective fulfilment ,become fruitful.
This is of course applicable for those natural actions that happen without any human interference!
HE is the only one beyond space and time. Ever ready to bless his true devotee.
For this reason, only hasn’t Kanakadaasa sung? “bAgilanu teredu sEveyanu koDo hariyE… samayAsamaya unTE!“ bhaktavatsala ninage!”
Meaning : “Kindly open the door and offer me darshan! Oh Lord Vishnu!! …… You are always there just in time at the call of the dearest of the devotees. Hence, recalling the grace of the Lord and referring to the plight of Ahalye in getting HIS attention early, there are no poets who don’t wail for her! There is no literature that doesn’t portray her vain! Likewise, there is no devotee who do not praise Rama’s Divine feet at the touch of which redeemed Ahalye of her curse!!
It’s astonishing to note that in Haridasa literature –every time when GOD’s compassion for his devotees is referred to, we find mentions of Ahalye invariably in one way or the other!!
Sri Vedanta Deshikar – a Sri Vaishnava Guru/Philosopher – in his holy book “Paduka Sahasra” – Hymns in praise of the Lords Paduka- imagined himself as Ahalye during his last days and appeals to Lord to save him in the same way that HE rescued her in the following hymn:
“ पाशाण कल्पमन्ते परिचित गौतम परिग्रह न्यायात् ।
प्रतिपद परिचरणार्हम् परिणमय मुकुन्द पादरक्शिणि माम् ॥ ९७० ॥ “
“pAshANa kalpamantE paricita gautama parigraha nyAyAt |
pratipada paricaraNArham pariNamaya mukunda pAdarakshiNi mAm||970 ||
“Hey! the Paduke of Lord Mukunda! In the last days, Please make me who is lying down like a dead stone with ignorance, eligible for Lord’s service, just the way you made Ahalya, the wife of Sage Gauthama, worthy for re-acceptance of Gautama, by the nudge of your footsteps! “
All such great people have poured a couple of tear drops through their writings for the sake of that Ahalya. But we? Where can we count ourselves after reading her story-Is it in the row of people who pour tears for her? Or …join that emotionless tribes’ set aside and move on?It’s a matter of our own thinking and mindset!
