If I ask you to name two famous stories that you have heard from your childhood!!! What would would be your response ?
I guess most people’s response would be stories from “Ramayana “ or “Mahabharata .” For many, both these epics’ stories are not just stories or lengthy verse texts , but they are their emotions; They have manifested into rituals in households; People celebrate as festivals throughout the country . They remain as the eternal truth. We can as well see the present day authors , researchers and historians presenting and trying to prove that all that’s mentioned in these epics are actual /real events that might have taken place. We see them trying to derive actual dates/period of time of occurrence as well.
One of the great authors of these epics, Maharshi Veda Vyasa , the author of Mahabharata is the topic of discussion here . He is also known by the name Krishna Dwaipayana. The reference is to his dark complexion (Krishna in Sanskrit means dark or black) and birth place (Dwaipayana is the island where he was born). He is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Narayana, who took birth as Krishna dwaipayana to make Vedic tradition or hymns which were in oral form until then into written form . His parents were the legendary sage , Parasara and the daughter of the fishermen chief , Satyavati .
He is believed to be one of the 7 chiranjeevis or beings who will leave till the end of time . He classified the Vedas into four main branches: The Rig Veda , Yajur Veda ,Sama Veda and the Atharva Veda . So , he came to be known as Veda Vyasa , which means the compiler of the Vedas .
He also played an important role in penning down the epic, Mahabharata . He played an active role in the lives of people through out the reign of Kuru kingdom. After many years , during the reign of Parikshita ,son of Abhimanyu , he wished to write down the story so , he prayed to lord Ganesha , who wrote it down as the latter dictated it . This amazing work has 100,000 shlokas or verses . He told the story to his disciples ,who passed them on to others .
Veda Vyasa was a great sage , poet and compiler . It can be said that he also mastered astronomy , as he has stated many astronomical wonders in the Mahabharata text . Thanks to this amazing seer poet , who has added several literary works to his credit which is almost impossible for any normal human to achieve in one life time. His immeasurable contribution list includes the 4 vedas, 18 puranas, bramha sutras, Bhagavatam and may be many more….
As for his birth on the full moon day of Ashadha, his star birthday is celebrated as Guru Poornima or Vyasa Poornima , which was celebrated on 4th and 5th July this year(2020) .
