Samudra Mathana

Churning Of The Milk Ocean

Devas wanted the divine nectar which would keep them immortal. Many people came together for the purpose like Devas, Asuras, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord of Snakes viz Vasuki.

VASUKI

Vasuki was a  six headed  snake . He  was the king of the Nagas , and the second son of Sage Kashyap and Kadru . Vasuki was so long that he could coil around the Mandara mountain more than nine times .Vasuki became the rope for churning the ocean . After the churning was over , Vasuki became small and had only one head when he coiled around Shiva’s neck .

CHURNING THE OCEAN

Vasuki was helping the devas and asuras to churn the milk ocean , Ksheerasagara . He acted as the rope , while Mount Mandara became the rod . The devas and asuras dug carefully around the Mount Mandara, as it was chosen as the rod to churn the ocean .

After this , they tried to lift it but they could not . Lord Vishnu came on his vehicle Garuda. Garuda lifted Mount Mandara and placed it in the milk ocean . They started churning, but the parvatha kept falling inside . Lord Vishnu turned himself into a huge tortoise . Going inside the ocean , he lifted Mount Mandara and placed it on his back . They continued churning while Lord Vishnu held it tight to help churning. Churning went on for a long time, Devas and Asuras were feeling tired. Vasuki and Vishnu were also bleeding. During the process , many precious things, holy beings such as the Goddess Lakshmi(who married Lord Vishnu), Kamadhenu (wish fulfilling holy cow ) , Airawata ( four tusked elephant )  and many more appeared. Finally , Dhanvantari ,the god of Ayurveda, came out with the nectar of immortality.

DISTRIBUTING THE NECTAR

As soon as Dhanvantari came with the pot of nectar, both Devas and Asuras wanted to own it. The Devas requested Lord Vishnu to distribute nectar among the Asuras and the Devas. Lord Vishnu took the form of a beautiful woman called Mohini. As the Asuras saw Mohini, they liked her very much. They agreed to take the nectar from Mohini.

Mohini thought for a while. She thought that she would not distribute the nectar to Asuras. She asked Devas and Asuras to sit in 2 separate lines. She started distributing the nectar. When she served Devas, it was nectar. When she served Asuras, she served water through her magic and the water tasted like nectar only.

An Asura by name Rahu suspected that Mohini is cheating them. Rahu went and sat in the Devas row by changing his form to a Deva.

When Mohini served nectar to Rahu, Gods Soorya and Chandra recognised Rahu. Then they complained “He is not a Deva; He is an Asura by name Rahu !!!!! “. Mohini turned into original form of Lord Vishnu, and threw his divine discuss named Sudarshana. Sudarshana followed Rahu and cut his head. Since Rahu had drunk the nectar, he would not die. His head remained Rahu and rest of his body was called Ketu.

FIGHT FOR THE NECTAR

Asuras got to know that they were being cheated. Asuras were ready for a war with their weapons. The Devas also quickly took their weapons. They both fought but Asuras were winning and Devas were losing. Lord Vishnu came to help the losing Devas. He threw his Sudharshana. It killed most Asuras. Few Asuras started throwing mountain rocks and Vishnu destroyed the attack with his golden arrows. Asuras were now defeated and they fled away.
