The story of Rahu and Ketu

Distribution of Amrutha

We all know that “AMRUTHA” was one among the 14 treasures which came up during the process of

‘Samudra Manthana’. Amrutha is a heavenly nectar of immortality. It is believed that by consuming Amrutha, one would become immortal. As soon as the Asuras(Rakshasas) got to know about this, they started to demand for Amrutha. In order to distract them, lord Vishnu took the avatara of “MOHINI” and pretended to distribute Amrutha between Suras (Devatas) and Asuras equally but gave Amrutha to only Suras.

One Asura by name SWARABHANU, came to know about this.

Who is Swarabhanu?

Sage Kashyapa and Diti-who is the mother of all Rakshasas had a daughter by name Simhika. She married a Rakshasa by name Viprasiddhi. Swarabhanu was born to Simhika and Virasissidhi.

So, Swarabhanu disguised himself as a Sura and sat in between SURYA AND CHANDRA so that he can also consume Amrutha. He was fortunate that he could drink a few drops of Amrutha too! But, very soon Surya and Chandra came to know about this and informed Mohini (Lord Vishnu). Vishnu, slaughtered Swarabhanu’s head by his powerful Sudarshana Chakra. But since Swarabhanu had already consumed Amrutha, he did not die.

His mother Simhika and a Brahmin sage by name Mini used their powers and prayed lord Vishnu to spare him. So his Head got a serpent’s body and his Body got a serpent’s head.  The head with the serpent’s body is RAHU and the body with serpent’s head is KETU.

Since then Rahu and Ketu consider Surya and Chandra as their natural enemies. They keep on revolving around them and try to disturb them. Rahu since then, waxes and wanes the moon daily resulting in the cycle of moon from New moon day to full moon day and Ketu revolves around the sun causing solar eclipses.
